The SHS varsity golf team competed at 3A regionals in Ellsworth on Monday. The team placed first overall with senior Zach Schissler taking third individually with a score of 79, senior Lucas Weigel taking fifth with a score of 82, and senior Lucas Briar taking sixth with a score of 83. Others competitors for Sterling were senior James McNutt with an 88, freshman Wyatt Schmidt with a 101, and senior Peter Settle with a 109.
The team took first place with a team score of 332, seventeen strokes better than the runner-up, Hays-Thomas Moore Prep, with a team score of 349. The team score is the total of the four best individual scores for each team.
“I feel like we played well in the conditions. Everyone had a tough time at Ellsworth. The course was not in good shape. We did well overcoming that.”, Weigel said.
The team will compete at 3A state in Seneca, Kansas on May 21. The tournament will be held at Spring Creek Golf Course in Seneca. Since the team placed first at regionals, all players on the varsity team will have the opportunity to compete at state.
“I’m looking forward to having fun and gaining some experience for the future at state”, freshman Wyatt Schmidt said.
“I feel like the team just needs to go into state relaxed”, Weigel said. “Not to have the nerves get to us.That’s what we need to improve on.”
